About the Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Race:
This July, one of the top Oahu Events actually begins in the water at Kalua Koa, on Molokai, and then travels to the beach at Maunalua Bay Beach Park on our lovely island of Oahu. The annual Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Race covers a distance of approximately 32 miles, before ending on our beautiful home of Oahu – close to our Honolulu Hotel.
The origins of paddleboarding in Hawaii date back to the 50’s and 60’s, when the sport was the prime domain of the most hardcore of watermen and big-wave riders. In 1996, paddleboarding began to make a comeback, finding a new set of acolytes on the North Shore of Oahu, and in Honolulu, at the Outrigger Canoe Club.
Paddleboarding was in its hey day, and was one of the top Things to do on Oahu for locals and tourists alike. The top paddleboarder at the time was Dawson Jones, who was inspired to establish a race here on the Islands that was similar to one he participated in in California – the 32-mile Catalina Classic, which went from Manhattan Beach to the island of Catalina.
Jones called on his trusted training partners, Garrett McNamara and Mike Takahashi, to talk about starting a paddleboard race between Molokai and Oahu – along the Kaiwi Channel. The 2 men loved the idea and a year later Molokai 2 Oahu launched as one of the top Oahu Events for athletes, casual paddleboarders, and spectators.
