Duke Kahanamoku deserves a big “thank you” from anyone who is a fan of surfing. This accomplished athlete, actor, Olympian, and businessman is called the father of modern surfing, and it was his love for the sport that helped to thrust surfing into the limelight and make it the hugely popular pastime that it is today. Duke’s Oceanfest is a Waikiki Event that pays homage to Duke Kahanamoku.
For nine days, Waikiki will become the backdrop for a variety of watersport competitions. Some of the sports represented at this Oahu Thing to Do are longboard surfing, paddleboard racing, tandem surfing, beach volleyball and swimming.
Individual competitors and teams will come to Waikiki from around the world to take part in this Waikiki Event. Many more will come to Oahu Hotels to watch the exciting competitions. Autograph signings, a Wounded Warrior Canoe Regatta and the Duke’s Oceanfest Expo are other activities that spectators can enjoy during their time at the Event.
The Lifeguard Competition is another fan favorite. Lifeguards will compete in several categories such as paddleboard rescue and swimming. The crowd loves watching these competitions which also include a bit of fun with one part of the competition that resembles musical chairs.
If you’ll be staying at our Oahu Hotel during Duke’s Oceanfest then consider spending a day or two watching the impressive athletes. This Waikiki Event is more than just a chance for athletes to compete. It is also a way to help young Hawaiians by providing grants and educational opportunities to deserving Hawaiian athletes.
