Honolulu Zoo

Diamond Head
The most famous volcanic crater in the world, Diamond Head is located on the southeast coast of Oahu overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Diamond Head is a volcano that has been extinct for 150,000 years. Because of its crescent shape, it was originally named Leahi by the ancient Hawaiians, meaning "brow of the tuna." The British sailors named it "Diamond Head" in the 1800s. When they first saw the crater at a great distance, the calcite crystals in the lava rock appeared to glimmer in the sunlight. The sailors mistakenly thought there must be diamonds in the soil. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit. A must-do day hike for anyone visiting Oahu.
